By the end of the lesson, students should be able to know: - Read for general and specific information about festival in Viet Nam. - Talk about festivals in Viet Nam. * Content - Vocabulary: Relating to unit 5 - Grammar: Complex sentences - Skills: Reading and speaking - Gifted students: Read comprehension the related texts. 2. Ss’ books, text books, projector, computer, Plickers software. III. Procedures: T’s and Ss’ activities Contents Activity 1. (5’) Aim: To attract Ss’ attention to the lesson and to lead in the new lesson. - T asks Ss some questions about festivals in Viet Nam. Activities 2. 20’ Aim: Ss can know some words and lead in the text. Help Ss read about customs and traditions in Viet Nam and answer the questions. - Below are pictures from websites about festivals in Viet Nam. Work in groups to answer the following questions. In small groups, have Ss look at the pictures and answer the questions, but don’t check the answers with the class. - Now read the information about these festivals to check your ideas. Give Ss two minutes to skim the passages and check their answers in * For gifted students: Read comprehension the related texts. - Find words in the passage that have similar meaning to these words or phrases. Now give Ss one minute to scan the passages to find the words. Explain that to scan they must move their eyes quickly over the text to look for specific information, rather than reading every word. Ask Ss ti ubderline or cirle the words they find with a pencil. T may help Ss work out the meanings of these words from the context. Then check with the whole class. - Read the information again and answer the following questions. -Ss read the text again and answer the questions. -Ss note where they found the information that helped them ta answer the questions. Ss can compare answers with apartner before discussing them as a class. Ss’ own answers. Activity 3 (18’) Aim: Learn and talk about the festivals which help students love and be proud of them. - Work in pairs. Your teacher is organizing a trip. You have two options: going to Huong Pagoda or going to Hung Kinh Temple. You have to decide the following: 1. Which place do you prefer to go to? Explain your choice. 2. What things should you take with you? Why? First, Ss work in pairs, choosing one of the two places: Huong Pagoda or Hung King Temple to go and give a reason for their choice. Activity 4. (5’) Aim: Ss summary content and are guided to study at home. - Repeat the main points in the lesson. Vocabulary about traditions in VN. I. READING Ex 1. Below are pictures from websites about festivals in Viet Nam. Work in groups to answer the following questions. A Hung king temple festival B Huong pagoda festival 1. What are the people doing in each picture? 2. Who do people worship at the Hung King Temple Festival? 3. Who do people worship at the Huong Pagoda Fastival? -Explain that to skim, they must move their eyes very quickly over the text to get a general idea of the subject. Ex 2. Now read the information about these festivals to check your ideas. Ex 3. The Hung King Temple festival takes place from the 8th to 11th day of the third lunar month. 2. What is included in the offerings to the Hung Kings? Incense, specialities such as chung cakes, day cakes and five-fruit trays. 3. Why is it joyful to go to the Hung King Temple Festival? Because there are many joyful activities including bamboo swings, lion dances, wrestling and xoan singing performances. 4. What do people do to worship Buddha at the Huong Pagoda Festival? People join a procession and make offerings of incense, flowers, fruit and candles. 5. Which of the activities at the Huong Pagoda Festival do you like most? II. SPEAKING 5. Work in pairs. Your teacher is organizing a trip. You have two options: going to Huong Pagoda or going to Hung Kinh Temple. You have to decide the following: Example:I prefer to go to Huong Pagoda because I really want to travel Along Yen Stream by boat. How about you? Example:I think we should take a bottle. By the end of the lesson, students should be able to know: - Listen to get specific information about heroes in VN - Write a paragraph about a festivals in VN. - Gifted students: + Listen comprehension the related texts. + Write sentences and a paragraph (about 120-150 words) about Festivals in VietNam correctly. 2. Ability: Improve listening and writing skills 3. Attitude: - Finding out about the festivals in Viet Nam and enjoy them and know how to hold. - Showing their respect to friends and teachers. II. Teaching aids: Text books, cassette, chalk, pictures and some boards. III. Procedures: T’s and Ss’ activities Contents Activity 1. (5’) Aim: Ask questions to get ready for the topic T writes the word ‘hero’ on the board as the centre of a word web and asks volunteers to come up and add any words or phrases to the word-web connected with the topic of ‘heroes’. (Accept all ideas and don’t correct anything. Then tell Ss they are going to listen to a passage about a Vietnamese ‘hero’ and open the books.) Activity 2. (10’) Aim: Ss practice listening about the festivals. 1. Who is Saint Giong? 2. What did he do for the country? -Ss work in pairs, describing the picture and then answer the questions. -Ss guess they are going to listen to: a tour guide giving information about the Giong Festival. -Ss read the questions carefully and try to predict the answers based on what they know. Remind them to pay attention to key words in the options. -Ss listen, circle the right answers. Check answers with the class. -Ss underline key words in the questions. Ss listen, write answers on a piece of paper. - Ss read out their answers to the class. Elicit any corrections from the class as you write their answers on the board (short answers) * For gifted students: Listen comprehension the related texts. They have to give full answers. Activity 3. 25’ Aim: Writing a short paragraph about festivals. -Set a time limit for Ss to brainstorm ideas and write their notes. Move around, help Ss with ideas where necessary. -Ss refer back to the reading passages in skills 1, and note some necessary expressions and language, connectors they may need. -Ss write a first draft. Display all or some of the articles on the wall/ board. Other Ss give comments. Ss edit and revise the articles as homework. - Sts Write a paragraph (about 70 words) * For gifted students: Write a paragraph (about 120). Activity 4 (5’) Aim: Ss summary content and are guided to study at home. - Give out the homework and asks Ss to do it. I. LISTENING Ex 1. Work in pairs. He is a mythical hero, who grew from a three-year-old child into a giant overnight. 2. When do the preparations for the festival begin? The preparations begin one month before the festival. 3. What kind of ceremony takes place after the procession? A religious ceremony. 4. What happens when night falls? There is a cheo performance. 5. How important is this festival? This festival shows the love for our motherland and the preservation of our cultural heritage. II. WRITING Ex 4. Work in pairs. Discuss with your partner the festival in Viet Nam that you like best. Use the web below to take notes. - Connectors used to make compounds and complex sentences. When, while, because, And, but, so First, then, moreover Ex 5. Now use the notes to write an article about this festival for the school website. Remember to add any necessary connectors below to make compound and compound and complex sentences. By the end of the lesson, students should be able to know types of folk tales, the story Lac Long Quan and Au Co over Duong and Nick's conversation, the way to tell story - Vocabulary: the dragon king of the ocean, a fairy, legend, folk tale, fable, fairy tale, title, genre, main character, plot - Grammar: Review 2. Ability. - Practice the dialogue fluently - Ss will be able to use the lexical items related to the topic and read correct intonation. 3. Attitude. - Read and find out about the folk tales and students love reading them. - Have respect for teachers. II. Teaching aids: T: lesson plan, papers, computer, speaker, ... III. Procedures T’s and Ss’ activities Contents Activity 1. Warm up (5’) Aim: To attract Ss’ attention to the lesson and to lead in the new lesson. Warm-up Game: Tell name of stories - Play in 2 big groups. - 4 pictures of 4 stories, ss tell the name. Lead in: Ask ss some questions: + What types of story are they? + What story are Duong and Nick talking about? + How does Duong tell the story? - Lead in new lesson. Activity 2. (10’) Aim: Help Ss interact a conversation and answer the questions. - Ss have a look at the picture in GETTING STARTED. Introduce the students in the picture: Duong & Peter - T uses technique to introduce new words. (pictures, explaination ...) - Guide ss to read. - Call ss to read again. Activity 3 (25’) Aim: Ss can practice the lexical items related to the topic. - Ss match the types of stories with their definitions. - Ss listen and check their answers. - Ss work pairs to think of an example or each type of story. - Ss listen and repeat. - Ss work individually to match the words or phrases with their meanings -Ss compare the answers with their partners. - Ss work in groups and complete the table. - Ss write answers on the paper. - Ss compare the answers with their partners. - Ss give mark to their friends. - One student retell the story. - Ss listen to the conversation.
