I. Objectives

By the end of the lesson, Ss will be able to read for specific information about young people doing community service and talk how to contribute to community activity.

- Vocabulary: the lexical items related to community service and volunteer work.

- Grammar: Past simple and present perfect .

b. Skills: Improve their reading , speaking and writing.

c. Attitude: Ss know how to do volunteer work.

- Communicative competence

1. Teacher: text book, extra board, cassette tape and real objects.

Communication
I. Objectives
By the end of the lesson, Ss will be able to know the activities that teenagers in the USA and in Viet Nam have done to help the community.
1. Knowledge, Skills, Attitude: 
a. Knowledge:
- Vocabulary: the lexical items related to community service and volunteer work.
- Grammar:	Past simple
	Present perfect
	Use “because” for giving reasons.
b. Skills: Improve their reading , speaking and writing.
c. Attitude: Ss should do volunteer work.

II. Preparation
1. Teacher: text book, extra board, cassette tape and real objects.
2. Students: textbook, notebook, workbook.

Contents
- T elicits different volunteer activities form Ss. 
Think of the activities both in the local community/ city/ town/ Viet Nam, and from other places that you have read about, or seen in books, or on TV, or on the Internet, etc
2. Knowledge formation activities (36’)

Contents
Aims:Ss know the activities that teenagers in the USA have done to help the community.
- T presents the words in the Extra Vocabulary and asks Ss to try to guess what the meanings are, and how that may relate to community services and volunteer work.
- T asks Ss to look at the photos and describe what they see. Then tell them to compate their ideas with the text.
- Ss work individualy.
Vocabulary

1. Look at the photos and read about the following volunteer activities for teenagers in the United States.

Aims: Ss know the activities that teenagers in Viet Nam have done to help the community.
-T tells Ss now they will learn about volunteer activities in Viet Nam. Ask ss what they think the volunteers in the photos are doing.
- T asks Ss to do the matching task.
- T asks Ss if they know any other actual information about these volunteer activities, or if they know any other similar activities that take place in Viet Nam.
2. Look at the photos about community service in Viet Nam. Match them with the activities Key

Aims: Ss tell the benefits each activity may bring to the community
- T asks Ss to complete the exercise in groups.
- Each group choose one person from the group to report back to the class.
3. Work in groups. Discuss the benefits each activity may bring to the community. Share your answers with the class

-T asks them to take notes of their classmates’ answers so that they can share the most interesting answers with the class later.

- T asks Ss to read the text and underline any words they don’t know.
- As a whole class, discuss any unfamiliar words from the text.

- T reminds Ss of some of the American volunteer activities they learnt about in the last lesson.
- T calls on Ss to read the statements from 2 aloud.

- Encourage them to think of all the volunteer activities they have learnt so far in this unit, and any other activities that they know.
- Tell Ss they only need to write in note form and not full sentences.
- Ss work individually.
4. Idea bank: Fill in the table with your ideas for volunteer activities.

- T divides the class into groups of four. Explains that after each person shares his/ her ideas from 4, the group will need to choose one ideas and develop it in more details.
- T asks Ss to give a short presentation about their idea/ bark to the class.
- Ss work in groups.
- Ss presents their talking.
- T remarks.
5. Work in group. Share the ideas in your idea bank with your group members. Then use the most interesting ideas to create a new group idea bank and share it with the class.
Example:
A: We could make postcards and sell them to raise money.
B: What types of postcards?
C: where should we sell them?

Aims: Ss can listen for specific information about the volunteer work of student. Writing about community service.
- T asks Ss to guess what Mai and Phuc will talk about.
- T plays the recording and elicits from Ss the gist of this recording.
- T plays the recording twice and have Ss answer the questions.
- Ss work in pairs.
- Ss gives the answers.
- T gives feedback. 
- T plays the recording again and let Ss fill in the blanks.
- Confirm and correct their answers.

Aims: Ss can Write a short paragraph about community service.
Go through the study Skills box with the class. Explain that ‘because’ is used to introduce the reason for something, and it can be put at the beginning of the sentence or in the middle. For exercise 4, Ss will need to identity which sentence is the reason.
For a more advanced class, T may introduce ‘as’ and ‘since’, which are similar in meaning and use to ‘’because’.

Aims : Students can write a paragraph about volunteer work.
- Tell Ss now they will write a paragraph using the ideas they generated in Speaking 4. it time is short.
- T may ask Ss to make notes in class then develop the notes into a paragraph
5. Look at your volunteer ideas in Speaking 4. Choose one idea and write a short paragraph about it.
