I. Objectives:

 

1. Knowledge (language focus):

 

By the end of this lesson, students will/should be able to:

 

- Review the knowledge of the past simple tense.

 

- Use the past simple tense to talk about the completed actions in the past.

 

- Use the vocabulary and structures about the topic community service to talk about the activities in the past.

 

-  Raise Ss’ awareness of the past simple tense and the past form of some verbs.

 

- Help Ss distinguish between the present simple, present continuous and past simple in specific context.

 

- Identify specific information from the contexts of the activities to complete the exercises in this lesson.

 

2. Competences: By the end of the lesson, students will/should be able to:

 

- Develop their reading skill and writing skill through reading for general and specific information about the contexts related to the topic community service.

 

- Talk about their community service activities and other people in the past.

 

- Review pronunciation the sounds / t /, / d / , / id / in the words.

 

3. Qualities: By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:

 

- Ss can consolidate, broaden and percept the knowledge.

 

- Be aware of about community service in the life.

 

- Ss can complete the requirements of the lesson individual, in pairs or in groups.

 

- Extend Ss’serious learning attitudes; love learning English, energetically and actively participate in learning activities.

Lesson 3: A closer look 2
I. Objectives: 
1. Knowledge (language focus):

2. Activity1:
 Circle the correct answer A, B or C to complete each sentence.
(5 minutes)
- Help Ss to review how to use the past simple tense.
-To introduce the topic of the lesson, the vocabulary and the grammar points of this lesson.
- To review Ss knowledge of the past simple tense.
* Grammar: The past simple
- Focus Ss’ attention on the Remember! box.
- Explain the uses of the past simple: We use the past simple to talk about completed actions in the past.
- Remind Ss of the specific time expression they may use to talk about past actions, such as: yesterday, last week, last month, three week ago, or in 2000, .
- Then teacher may ask Ss some questions:
+ Did you go to school yesterday?
+ What did you do yesterday?
+ What did you do last week?
+ Who did you meet two days ago?
- Some Ss answer the questions of teacher.
Example:
+ S1: Yes, I did.
+ S2: I went to school.
+ S3: I visited my grandparents.
+ S4: I met my old friend.
- Teacher shows the task 1 on the projecter.
 - Ask Ss to look at the board and read the requirement of the task. ( Task 1 at page 31/ student’s book).
- Call some Ss read loudly the requirement of the task.
- Ask Ss to work individually to circle the correct answer.
- Ask Ss to take turn to give their answers.
- Call some Ss go to the board to write their answers.
- Check the answers as a class.
- Ask some Ss to read loudly full sentences with the correct answers. Correct their pronunciation if necessary.

- Call some Ss read loudly the requirement of the task.
- Have Ss work individually to complete the sentences with the past simple form of the given verbs.
- Ask some Ss to read out their sentences.
- Call some other Ss comment.
- Correct grammar and pronunciation mistake if necessary.
- Check the answers as a class on the projector.
- Ss check their answers if necessary.

- To help Ss distinguish between the present simple, the present continuous and past simple in specific context.
- Teacher shows the task 3 on the projecter.
 - Ask Ss to look at the board and read the requirement of the task. ( Task 3 at page 31/ student’s book).
- Call some Ss read aloud the requirement of the task.
- Ask the whole class to read loudly the verbs in the box and give their meanings.
- Ask some Ss to repeat the structures of the present simple and the present continuous with the specific time expressions.
- Have Ss work individually to complete the sentences with the correct form of the verbs from the box.
- Ask some Ss to read out the complete sentences. Correct grammar and pronunciation if necessary.
- Check the answer as a class on the projector.

Write complete sentences from the prompts
(5 minutes)
- To help Ss write full sentences using the correct form of the verbs.
- Ask Ss to look at the task 4 ( on page 32) in the text book.
- Call some Ss read aloud the requirement of the task.
- Have Ss work individually to write complete sentences from the prompts. 
- Ask Ss to work in pairs to swap their answers.
- Some students write their answers on the board. 
- Check the answers as a class on the projector.
- Have the whole class read aloud the complete sentences.
* The Key: 
1. Last year, our club donated books to children in rural areas.
2. Children sent thank- you cards to us a week ago.
3. I taught two children in grade 2 last summer.
4. Last spring, we helped the elderly in a nursing home.
5. We helped people in flooded areas last year.
6. Activity 5:
Work in pairs. Tom is from the Red Cross. Look at the fact sheet and ask Tom about his project in 2016 and 2018.
(8 minutes)

- To enable Ss to ask and answer questions related to past activities.
- To help Ss be aware of some community activities that Ss in other countries do
- Show the fact sheet of the task 5 on the projector.
- Introduce the Red Cross projects and activities in 2016 and 2018.
- Have Ss work in pairs to practice asking and answering questions based on the fact sheet.
- Tell Ss to follow the example.
- Remind them to use the past simple when they ask and answer questions about the past activities.
- Invite some pairs to make short conversation as an example. Correct any grammar and pronunciation mistakes if necessary.
* Examples:
- First pair:
Tom: I’m from the Red Cross. I worked on the Help Lonely People project in 2016.
Lan: What did you do?
Tom: We helped 200 lonely people .
Lan: What else?
Tom: We also answered calls from lonely people and visited museums with them.
- Second pair:
Tom: I’m from the Red Cross. I worked on the Support Ill People project in 2018.
Phong: What did you do?
Tom: We helped ill people at their home.
Phong: What else?
Tom: We also read book to ill people.
* Wrap/sum up (3 minutes)
Summarize what student have learnt and give some comments or feedback for their performance 
- Ask Ss to summarise what they have learnt in this lesson.
- Have them say out the past form of the verbs they learnt in the lesson.
The main content:
The past simple with the communication service actions
* Homework
(1 minute)

- Students find some words related to the topic the communication service actions in the past to share in the next class.
- Prepare the next lesson: 
Unit 3: Lesson 4- Skills 1.
